Is This The Best Buffalo Chicken Slice in the City?
Rome to Brooklyn Pizza makes a decent regular slice, but really shines with specialty pizzas
Welcome to Pizza Tasting Chronicles, my take on the pizza review. I eat a lot of pizza. I have a lot of opinions about pizza. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My first visit to Rome to Brooklyn Pizza & Panzerotti was not for the slice, but for the Panzerotti. I was writing about Panzerotti, the fried, pint-sized cousin of calzone, and wanted a point of reference.
The pizza looked good, and the panzerotti was excellent, so I returned with my wife for slices one afternoon and its become part of our regular launch rotation.
Rome to Brooklyn, Pizza & Panzerotti has two locations, one in East Williamsburg and another just north of McCarren park in Greenpoint. We’re equally likely to visit both, though the Grand Street spot is our local and the Greenpoint location where we bring a four-year-old.
The regular slice is totally fine. It’s hefty, heavy for its size, but doesn’t feel that way in the mouth. The sauce is a little sweet, but not in a grating way. And the cheese is plentiful enough.
But the truth is I rarely have a regular slice from Rome to Brooklyn because I’m much more likely to choose from the specialty pizza. This is probably the best buffalo chicken slice in the city.
I’ve always enjoyed a white slice, and while its not quite as velvety and creamy as the New Jersey pizzeria I grew up eating from, the heaping ricotta actually some flavor added to it. They also serve up a white slice with sausage and broccoli rabe that is a bit more complex, but I think I prefer the white.
There’s a vodka slice available here too that rivals any other I’ve come across. It’s tangy, but not too fatty.
Rome to Brooklyn also has a variety of square pies. Some are thicker, like a traditional New York Sicilian, and others are more in the tradition of the Long Island Grandma slice. Overall, there’s a bit of order what’s available from the slice counter.
The pizza crust here is unique. It’s not exactly a texture common to the classic New York slice joints, a bit denser overall, but it maintains the balance of crispy and chewy that is so important to a slice here.
Ultimately what keeps me coming back here is the variety of specialty pizza toppings. These flavors are near perfect, high quality, and taste great.
